Two Albertans appointed to Senate

August 31, 2024

Global News with Jaclyn Kucey

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced two Albertans have been appointed to the Senate: a corporate lawyer from Calgary and a vocal advocate for LGBTQ2 rights from Edmonton. As Jaclyn Kucey reports, the announcement has already caused a stir in the provincial government.

Jaclyn Kucey:Ron Byers has worked closely with Wells on a number of Pride initiatives.

Ron Byers: “From Western Canada and especially from Alberta… to have someone who is within the queer community to be in the Senate is going to be amazing. And it’s going to give us so much more visible representation right across Canada.

Pride Month about to get underway in Alberta as provincial policies loom

The start of Pride Month is just a few days away – but the celebrations feel different for many people this year. Controversial provincial policies continue to weigh heavily on the LGBTQ2S+ community. Morgan Black reports.

Ron Byers, promoter for Pride Edmonton, says the Alberta government has a chance to be part of the conversation.

“The UCP government has an opportunity to be a part of our celebrations as a Pride community if they’re wiling to come to the table with open minds for frank, honest, truthful conversations.

“If they want to blow it and just close their doors, that’s them,” he said.

For me this was such an amazing opportunity to participate in the production as the “Interviewer” off-camera. Working with an awesome cinematographer… Cory Johhn… was brilliant and he edited hours of interviews we did down to a truly wonderful reflection of our community.
